I’m delighted to chat today with D. B. Woodling is the author of The Immortal Twin, a vampire romance published recently by CamCat Books.
Can you tell us a little about your novel’s backstory?
Celeste and her twin brother Nick are four years old when orphaned, their parents exsanguinated by rogue vampires. Adopted by ‘righteous’ vampires, Bianca and Razvan Torok, they spend their childhood and young adult years fearful someone will discover what it is that makes their parents bizarrely different. Talk about peer pressure!
Who are your favorite authors?
My taste varies. I enjoy works from E. M. Forster, John Steinbeck, and Mark Twain to Stephen King, Karin Slaughter, Dean Koontz, and Michael Connelly.
What’s a piece of advice you’d give to aspiring authors?
Read until your eyes glaze over.
What inspired you to write this book?
Having written historical fiction, detective mysteries, and FBI thrillers, initially, it was just to see if I could hack writing a supernatural adventure. I developed a lot of respect for fantasy and paranormal fiction authors early on, as the genre is extremely challenging.
What is your pitch for this book?
The perfect dress for prom is the least of Celeste Torok’s problems. When her twin brother is involved in a horrific accident, she’s faced with losing him forever or defying the only parents she’s ever known.
What makes your book different from others in your genre?
The characters . . . or so I’ve been told. Readers have said I’ve managed to breathe life into the dead. As a reader, I detest “cardboard cutout” characters, so I really focus on all the players, fleshing them out, making each one believable. A unique plot point also makes The Immortal Twin distinctive.
Which character is your favorite?
Fane, a flamboyant gay vampire, is my absolute favorite. He’s witty, charming, and sensitive.
Describe your main character in three words.
Brave, intelligent, lovesick.
What is the central message you hope readers take away from the novel?
Although it might be easier to toss in the towel, never give up.
What’s your favorite scene in the book?
When Bianca enlists Fane as Celeste’s reluctant guardian, and he arrives in an unapologetic swoosh, draped in gaudy splendor and slinging smartassery.
What is your writing process?
I start with one or two opening lines, followed by a basic outline that I don’t always adhere to. I usually let the characters take it from there. Readers can find a more in-depth answer on my website.
What are you working on now?
I am hard at work on the sequel and have a few patches of missing hair to prove it!
What’s one thing readers would be surprised to learn about you?
I ride a Harley Davidson motorcycle whenever I get the opportunity, have been known to wrangle horses in knee-deep mud, yet I’ve portrayed demure and fragile female characters before countless live audiences.
What’s your favorite personal quote or motto?
“Always borrow money from a pessimist. He won’t expect it back.“
~Oscar Wilde

Synopsis of The Immortal Twin:
The Omniscients, ancient vampires who reside within the Hollow Earth, impose strict conduct for all vampires—guidelines Razvan and Bianca Torok, commanders of the Realm, have followed for centuries. When renegade vampires known as the Harvestersattack the survivors of a horrific explosion, the Realm comes to their defense. Failing to save the Crenshaws, the Toroks adopt their twin children, Celeste and Nick.
The only commonality Celeste and Nick share is their mortality. While Celeste struggles to remain a straight-A student, Nick prefers partying to studying and still manages to excel. Celeste is as introverted as Nick is charismatic, and she often wonders how one identical twin can be such a dud, the other so perfect.
When Nick’s rebellious ways place Celeste in danger, at the Toroks’ insistence, she seeks safety in the Midwest. As if the familial alienation isn’t enough, she’s tormented by her forbidden desire for Tristan, The Realm’s supreme warrior. With her future uncertain and her past shattered, she follows in her biological father’s footsteps and joins law enforcement.
As the lead investigator on several bizarre child abduction cases, Celeste soon discovers that bullets and modern weaponry are useless against these abductors. A war brewing between the Realmand the Harvesters, Celeste joins Tristan, her parents, and all of the Realm’swarriors to destroy the renegade vampires once and for all.
