This week in our pet therapy class Boo and I were introduced to the concept of a bark pack. Similar to a doggie bug out bag, the bark pack puts together every item a pet therapy team may need on a client visit.
A sturdy bag with a zip fastener is required. I choose a construction tool bag with a shoulder strap due to its heavy duty construction and waterproof bottom.
A bell is attached to the zipper. Children may become curious about a visitor’s belongings. An audible bell is a good alert as to whether a bag is being investigated.
Pet Partners visits are fairly short at two hours or less. Therefore, food is not usually required for the therapy animal. Tasty training treats are always welcome! It is recommended that you pack a collapsible water bowl and a bottle of water for your pet.
A baby blanket can act as a soft barrier between your pet and the client. For a small dog like Boo, she may be able to lie quietly on a client’s lap on her blanket. The blanket can provide comfort to both the pet and the client who may fear scratches from a pets claws.
Every pet is bathed and groomed before a pet therapy visit. In case a clean-up is needed, unscented baby wipes, tissues, a lint brush and anti-bacterial products are included in the bark pack. Sealable waste bags and waterless hand wash are a must. A people and pet first aid kit can be helpful in case of an emergency. Breath mints for the pet’s owner are recommended. We will be talking to our clients in close quarters, and want to make sure that everyone is comfortable!
Pet toys can add an element of fun for your pet and their client. A soft brush can be used by a client to groom your dog. This interaction helps to improve the bonding experience between your pet and their new friend. Gentle pet grooming can improve a client’s motor skills. This can be particularly important for an autistic or elderly client.
A flashlight for dropped items, a spare leash and a pen and paper are handy additions to the bag. A photocopy of Pet Partners ID’s, the pet’s medical records, and emergency vet phone numbers are required. Official ID tags and Pet Partners badges, vests or bandanas can help a team pass quickly through the security check in at client facilities.
Other items for the bark pack can include a photo album of the pet and a camera to capture special moments.
Boo’s bark pack is almost ready to go. We just need to add a photo album of her puppy days to make it complete. Our Pet Partners test is scheduled for this weekend. Hopefully, we will soon be able to put our bark pack to good use visiting hospitals, schools and retirement communities. Wish us luck!
