The British Chocolate Ban

Queen Victoria would not be amused by Hershey’s prohibition on British chocolate

The Hershey Company recently banned the import of British chocolate into the United States. This draconian move has outraged a large contingency of chocoholics across the globe. The prohibition feels like a personal attack upon those who love their Cadbury’s Flakes and Yorkie bars.

The reason for this emotional response is simple – our comfort foods are a fundamental part of who we are.

Upon eating a chocolate bar, our physical senses of taste, smell, touch, sight and hearing are activated. We experience the pleasure of unwrapping the bar, hearing the crackle of the paper, seeing the velvety smooth chocolate, smelling the luscious scent of cocoa butter. Long before we touch and taste the chocolate, we are transported to a realm of pleasure.

As we enjoy the candy our limbic system is activated. Memories of past chocolate experiences are stirred; a Yorkie bar shared with schoolmates in a playground, or a Cadbury’s Easter egg filled with creamy chocolate Buttons. Perhaps we recall the face of a long passed loved one who always held a special place in their heart for the crunch of a Toffee Crisp.

For many of us, our ticket to the past is Cadbury’s chocolate.

If Hershey enforces their prohibition, what comfort food could be next for the axe?  Will they take away our PG Tips? Our McVities Chocolate Digestives? Or, (God forbid), our HP Sauce?

The time to fight is now!
