There is nothing quite like a holiday feast to bring a family together. American families delight in sharing a Thanksgiving turkey roast. The British savor mince pies and a flaming figgy pudding over the Christmas holidays. Feasts to celebrate the New Year are often focused on regional favorites and family traditions. My home county in England is Yorkshire, famed throughout the land as lamb country. My New Year isn’t quite complete without a lamb roast with all the “fixin’s.”
“Is that so?” said my American husband. “Then why don’t you make a lamb roast on New Year’s Day?”
I balked. The hazy memory of delicious lamb roasts did not provide me with a plan of action for how to create the perfect Yorkshire roast.
But now, I had to try. A treasure hunt for culinary wisdom began. I poured over recipes in luscious cook books. I surfed the Internet and devoured the musings of Jamie Oliver and Emeril Lagasse. Piece by piece, I created a road-map to the perfect meal: A true taste of Yorkshire, right here in New England.
“How did it turn out?” I hear you ask.
Reader, it was delicious! If you’d like to make your own journey to a Yorkshire New Year, please feel free to try the recipe below. You may create a new holiday tradition for your own family.
