I’m pleased to announce that Boo the Yorkie and I have made our debut as a Pet Therapy Team. We passed the Pet Partners examination in May. Since then, we have investigated a wide variety of volunteer options.
Due to her sweet nature and portable size, Boo is welcome to visit libraries, hospitals and community centers across the state. Following a rigorous background check, we joined the volunteer team at our local hospital.
Boo’s therapy debut began with a walk in the park, a bubble bath, and a fashion consultation as to which bow best complimented her yellow service vest. Boo trotted confidently into the hospital lobby. For the next two hours, she captured the heart of everyone she met. She gave Yorkie snuggles to patients, visitors, doctors, nurses, executive staff, and security guards alike. She drew smiles from adults and children in the chemotherapy, IV and pediatric wards.
As Boo is a petite young miss, I held her in my arms for many of the interactions. She is also allowed to visit patients on their bed. She rests upon a fluffy white towel as the patient gently strokes her. Both Boo and the patient enjoy this special time together.
As Boo and I walked home, she had an extra bounce in her step. I think she knew that she had achieved something extraordinary. Well done, Miss Boo!
