I recently attended The Steampunk World’s Fair in Piscataway, New Jersey. The Fair is the world’s largest steampunk event. It’s a very friendly convention. Everyone who attends loves some aspect of the Victorian aesthetic and is genuinely thrilled to meet others of the same mindset.
The Fair is a celebration of creativity. There are fantastic artists, unique musicians and numerous writers each celebrating the quirkier aspects of an alternate nineteenth century. There are numerous shows running from the Victorian crowd-pleaser of unwrapping a mummy, to classes on creating your own retro-futuristic weapons. The costuming track helps beginners and enthusiasts alike to create their own Victorian influenced ensembles. The science and pseudo-science of the nineteenth century are discussed in various panels. Plus, there are numerous events designed to allow folks to socialize with a suitably Victorian style food or beverage.
Musicians and performance artists create their own magic at the Fair. From Emperor Norton’s Stationary Marching Band to The Eternal Frontier and Steam Powered Giraffe, the music is eclectic and always fun. There is an element of comedy in almost every performance. This reflects the fact that, yes, we all know we are being rather silly this weekend. That is what makes the event so wonderful! You have the opportunity to dress up in your favorite steampunk attire and enter a world of sensory delights and camaraderie far beyond the scope of everyday life.
I attended numerous shows within the event. The literary panel included the wonderful Gail Carriger. Her novels explore themes from urban fantasy, steampunk, comedy, historical adventure, romance and mystery. It was a pleasure to meet her after the event. She was as charming as one of her own characters and dressed to perfection!
I also attended the Magic of the Apothecary mixology workshop with The Cocktail Whisperer Warren Bobrow. In the days before refrigeration and modern medicine, tonics were created to cure all ailments. These healing tonics became the foundation of various delicious cocktails. Magic happens when you blend the finest artisanal liquors with honey, herbs, bitters and a spritz of absinthe.
The preparation of absinthe is a fascinating procedure involving science, patience and, of course, theatre! During the mixology event, we sampled absinthe louched in the gorgeous Slipstream glass. The ritual involves adding sugar and ice cold water to absinthe and watching the green nectar louche to a cloudy, heaven sent dream. Now you can add a steampunk flavor to any celebration without putting on a corset (unless you want to!).
I can’t wait to attend next year’s Steampunk World’s Fair. The world of retro-futurism is open to everyone, no goggles required. Come back in time with us and join the party!
