For the last two weeks I have experienced the joys of a major home renovation. My first poor decision was to refinish the hardwood floors and remodel the master bathroom at the same time. Did you spot the error in my strategy? Needless to say, refinishing the floors before starting the bathroom renovation would have made a LOT more sense!

Armed with enough wood, paint and drywall to build a (small) replica of Camelot, I set to work. My new tile saw and table saw both worked splendidly. Alas, I had neglected to purchase the requisite safety equipment for using the saws. Fortunately, in a steampunk household there are numerous pairs of brass goggles at hand. Outfitted with a matching leather respirator and a sawdust-resistant top hat, I set to work.

Did I mention that I had pulled my back muscles carrying in two-by-four planks into the house? Hence, a metal-boned corset completed my sawing ensemble. The back support provided helped me to accomplish framing out the new bathtub in fine style. I became so used to wearing my Victorian accessories that I soon forgot that I was wearing them. A delivery man from Home Depot was somewhat taken aback by my appearance, but seemed more than happy to help carry in my purchases. I may wear the same outfit when I next visit the store to see if my ability to secure aid in the lumber department is increased by steampunk accessories.

During the renovation, I have travelled to various studios to record voice-over sessions for my clients. I didn’t want to leave my Yorkshire Terrier puppy Boudicca (Boo) alone in the construction debris, so I requested if I could possibly bring her with me in her travel crate.

To my delight, every studio welcomed her with open arms. Boo made numerous new friends, and has been invited to return for future voice-over sessions. Who knows, maybe she will record her own session one day!

Now, it’s back to the sawdust and spackle of my steampunk home renovation. Has anyone seen my goggles?
