I recently bought a personalized engraved brick to support the Tesla Science Center at Wardenclyffe. The bricks are part of a fund-raising campaign to create a museum and science center on the site of Nikola Tesla’s final laboratory.
The original purpose of the laboratory was to create wireless telegraphy and power transmission. The site included a transmitter tower that stood 187 feet above the ground. Sadly, Tesla’s financial issues led to the site’s downfall. By 2012, demolition of the remaining buildings seemed imminent. Against all odds, a crowd-funding campaign supported by The Oatmeal cartoonist Matt Inman helped a non-profit group to purchase the property for $1.6 million.
Although it will take time and money to transform the derelict site into a working museum and science center, we can all help to build the museum. You can donate funds or volunteer at one of their site cleaning events. Until the end of December 2015, you can also purchase an engraved brick that will be installed at the site in 2016. It’s the perfect holiday gift for the steampunk, history or science buff in your life!
